Pahalgam Route: The Pahalgam route is the longer of the two, covering a distance of about 46 kilometers. The journey begins from Pahalgam, passing through Chandanwari, Sheshnag, and Panchtarni before reaching the holy cave.
Baltal Route: The Baltal route is shorter, covering approximately 14 kilometers, and is often chosen by those looking for a quicker journey. Although the trek is steep and more physically demanding, it allows pilgrims to complete the yatra within a day. The route offers stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape, making the challenging climb worthwhile.
The Amarnath Cave is steeped in ancient mythology and spiritual significance. According to legend, it was in this cave that Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality (Amar Katha) to his consort, Goddess Parvati. The ice Shiva Lingam that forms inside the cave is believed to grow and shrink with the phases of the moon, symbolizing the cyclical nature of life.
The cave also houses two smaller ice formations, representing Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha. The spiritual energy of the cave, combined with the awe-inspiring natural surroundings, creates an atmosphere of profound devotion and tranquility.
